TV(2020) - BEHIND THE SCENES
One of my first collaborations with rubberband - this was another quarantine project. We were trying to figure out how to continue to make work during the lockdown. The jumping off point was some mixed media work Jason had done for the album’s cover art. I just started messing around with that style and material and combined it with an older desire to make an analogue film strip. Simon filmed the band and cut it together with some archival material which turned into the “spine” of the video - the central strip which we iterated and added to.
We wanted to make the chorus’s distinct - so these got more detailed frame-by-frame collageing at 6 fps, which - we rationalized - allowed people absorb the images more fully, but also made the video possible to finish. Ben Duff helped me with the chorus collages.
My friend and animator Christine Pfister did about half of the filmstrip animation in the video - about two minutes - in just over a week. It was a marathon.
