This was the first time I had done it for two years and it felt like the right scope of thing to allow me to dip my toes back in those waters. Of course we wanted to shoot on film, and it probably would have been a lot better if we had. But it also would have been more expensive. And thus would have either not existed or never been completed.
These little section of animation was my nod to Saul Bass’s animated sections of Vertigo. I love how the starkly the animation sits in contrast to the live action. The fact that the majority of the movie is conventionally shot really allows those little grace notes of surrealism to play an outsized role in the film’s overall effect. The curling explosion of cards was basically directly lifted from the animation of the flowers in that film.
